„…I am in love with you not just because you are external to me but also I fantasy of how you can fill what is missing from my interior lives. I know love stories are frustration stories… Falling in love reminds us of a frustration that we didn’t know we had we wanted someone, we felt deprived of something, and then it seems to be there. And what is renewed in that experience is an inten- sity of frustration, and an intensity of satisfaction. It is as if, oddly, I was waiting for someone but I didn’t know who you were until you arrived. Whether or not I am aware that there was something missing in my life, I was when I meet you – the one I want. What psychoanalysis will add to this love story is that the one I fall in love with really is the one of my dreams; that I have dreamed you up before I met you; not out of nothing — nothing comes of nothing — but out of prior experience, both real and wished for. I recognize you with such certainty because I already, in a certain sense, know you; and because you have quite literally been expecting them, you feel as though you have known you for ever, and yet, at the same time, you are quite foreign to me. You are familiar foreign bodies. This duality of the familiar and the foreign is mirrored in the osmotic relationship between presence and absence, with which every infatuated lover is intimately acquainted — that parallel intensity of longing for my lover’s presence and anguishing in you absence. However much I have been wanting and hoping and dreaming of meeting the one of my dreams, it is only when I meet you that I will start missing you. It seems that the presence of an object is required to make its absence felt (or to make the absence of something felt)….“ (text taken from the video performance THE ARCHIVE LOVE STORY)

In the occasion of MEDITERRANEA17 – Young Artists Biennial, Viafarini – a no profit organization for contemporary arts – will host the participations of the Republic of San Marino with a two-year research project curated by Alessandro Castiglioni and Simone Frangi. 14 international artists and researchers participated in this stage-based process on research and mobility which took place between 2014 and 2015.
The four opening days of A Natural Oasis at Viafarini (from next 22th to 25th October), will focus on crucial aspects of archival culture through heterogenous devices and live performances. These aspects triggered the groups’ aim to carry out collective research lasting over a period of two years to analyze geopolitical and social problems related to archives: collection of documents, enumeration and organization of materials, creation of archives as system construction and archival ideologies. Through a narrative display, co-designed by the participants themselves, the research group of A Natural Oasis: Sarah Capesius (L), Martina Conti (SM), Viola Conti (SM), Lito Kattou & Leontios Toumpouris (CY), Alessandro Di Pietro (I), Katrín I. Jónsdóttir Hjördísardóttir Hirt (IS – USA), Nico Macina (SM), Francesca Mangion (M), Orestis Mavroudis (GR), Mnemoscape (Elisa Adami, Alessandra Ferrini) (I – UK), Giacomo Raffaelli (I – UK), Jacopo Rinaldi (I) will recall all the steps of this transnational project born in San Marino and migrated to Milan and Gibraltar. The activities of this project began in July 2014 with a summer school animated by Nina Danino, Ingibjorg Magnadottir and Gino Giannuizzi, dedicated to the analysis and re-working of the archive materials of the Provoc’arte 1991 fund – presently kept at the Municipality of Montegiardino – which gave the direction to all the following activities. Later, the group of 14 researchers met again at Viafarini in Autumn 2014 for an intensive workshop on archival video practice held by Basma Alsharif and Francesco Bertocco, and in Gibraltar, in June 2015, for a week of field research at the Gibraltar Garrison Library under the guidance of Jennifer Ballantine, Director of the Library and a post-colonial theorist, and artist Kapwani Kiwanga, involved in investigations on Afrotunnel.
A Natural Oasis is dedicated to contemporary art critic and teacher Roberto Daolio who curated Provoc’Arte in 1991 and devoted himself to study the methods through which the projects of young artists and their languages could be developed.
A Natural Oasis is promoted by the Cultural Institutes (BJCEM board) of Republic of San Marino with the Ministries for Education and Culture; Tourism and Political Youth, in collaboration with the University of the Republic of San Marino and the Montegiardino Municipality. A Natural Oasis it has been designed by Little Constellation in collaboration with Viafarini in the context of the Biennial of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean.
