Jelena Antic – TRACES

Jelena will host a artist talk in the SIM  gallery on Thursday the 19th. at of January at 5 pm.

The event will be in English

The exhibition will be open until  24th January in the In SIM gallery, Hafnarstræti 16, 101 Reykjavík.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:

The concept of this exhibition is a displacement of attention from the subject (figure), decentralization and introspective directing focus to a trace that was left after.
Context of a trace leads us to Derida’s Theory of Deconstructivism (Jacques Derrida).
He says that the trace is not a presence but is rather the simulacrum of a presence.
Derida with his deconstructionist thought and his critique of metaphysical tradition suggests that all that is being offered as a present is already some rest and a trace of what is absent, therefore, something other.
If the written, spoken and thought appears different, if there is no more natural connection of these entities that make up the philosophical basis, the question is what is left?
Derrida talks about the symbol, trace and text. Symbols are what surrounds us, trace is writing cultural heritage and layers that allow us to enter the characters in the sense, but text… text is always unsuccessful “transcription”, failed attempt at writing or describing, translation from one sphere to another expression.
As text is already “unsuccessful transcription” (as Derida says), I offer an abstract visual image instead. An image of what remains after an absence or relocation of the subject.
Theme of the exhibition would be how any kind of events or relationships leave their mark on us. Even when these entities leave, a trace remain imprinted on our mental map. These experiences form us as a person.

ABOUT JELANA’S ART:

About ABSTRACT MINIMALISM / ABSTRACT EXPRESIONISM

Artistic creation can mainly be described as a conversation of an artist with himself.
Abstract painting is like instrumental music – no text, no description, no figure, but certain feeling while we watch the painting or listen to music is existent. It can not be precisely described and defined, but it seems that we can perceive emotion or story that the artist convey, although without confirmation by lyrics in song or exact figure in the painting.
This is exactly what I want to highlight in my art.
I’m always striving to make paintings that can be read in several ways.
However, the essence is not about provocation, but it lies in my most sincere admiration for this phenomenon. I do not cease to delight the fact that one color looks like blue to someone, but that other see it as green; coral color can be seen as pink, orange or red.
I always try to trail along the edge between obvious and imaginary; to provide just enough for observer to create his own story, but without using symbols. Symbols carry a very distinct meaning, which can be an obstacle to this process. All of that can originate different interpretations of my paintings, and each of them is equally true and equally as important as all other interpretations, even mine.
