|The In, With and Between Us
The exhibition The In, With and Between Us invites Gerður Helgadóttir (IS, 1928-75) into an ongoing conversation between Ragnheiður Gestsdóttir (IS), Theresa Himmer (DK/IS) and Emily Weiner (US), that started when the three artists were fellow MFA students at the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2011. Their research-based conversation around non-linear readings of place and time, language and translation took on a practical dimension in the fall of 2015, when they reunited to transform their shared research into the exhibition Speak Nearby at Soloway in Brooklyn, New York.
For the exhibition at Gerðarsafn they’ve opened up their conversation to include pioneering Icelandic sculptor Gerður Helgadóttir for which the museum is named after. Questions of contexts, temporality and history-writing materialize, when Gerður is met as a peer and pulled across time and space and they all meet somewhere in-between, — together.
