The Living Art Museum presents Art / Work, a solo exhibition by artist Emil Magnúsarson Borhammar (IS/SE).
Preview 10th October at 4 pm in Völvufell 13-21, 111 Reykjavík.
For the exhibition in Nýló, Emil will show among other works, three short films. The films are independent works but also chapters – which complement each other in a larger on going process. One of the films shows Emil collecting 90.240 stones during his last year as an art student, the amount of Swedish kronas he received in study loans that year.
In another he collects 90.000 pine needles during his time as a grant holder at Iaspis in Stockholm, or the same number of Swedish kronas he received from the grant. (Emil has brought the pine needles with him to Iceland as part of the exhibition because they fit into his suitcase, but the stones were so voluminous and heavy that he could not afford to ship them here). In the films Emil reflects upon collecting in relation to his situation – either as an art student or grant holder – and notions of work, economics, art and power.
During the month of October Emil has been invited to the SÍM artist-in-residency program in Reykjavik. Over the course of this month he will collect a mixture of broken glass and found objects along the shores of Reykjavik. The total number of objects collected by the end of the month will be the same as the amount he will receive from SÍM as the artist-in-residence.
Throughout the exhibition he will continue to add objects to his collection. The exhibition will run until 15th November.
