The focus points of the 29th Reykjavik Arts Festival, as well as 22 events from this spring’s wide-ranging programme, were presented earlier this week to the media under the headline PART I, with a focus on the work of women, censorship and rights struggles in general, an echo of waves rising all around the world.
The Festival will open on May 13 and close on Sunday June 7. The opening this year will be marked with a performance by US dance company BANDALOOP, under the direction of Amelia Rudolph. Amelia has led her company to the very edge of skyscrapers and cliffs all around the world: A pioneer in vertical dance performance, BANDALOOP seamlessly weaves dynamic physicality, intricate choreography and the art of climbing to turn the dance floor on its side. BANDALOOP’s work has been presented in theaters and museums, on skyscrapers, bridges, billboards and historical sites, in atriums and convention halls, in nature on cliffs, and on screen. The world-famous company will enjoy their first ever appearance in Iceland as they perform three pieces on the façade of Adalstræti 6 during the Reykjavik Arts Festival’s opening ceremony, Wednesday May 13.
On that same day a new billboard project by Guerrilla Girls, commissioned by Reykjavik Arts Festival, will be unveiled in the city centre. Guerrilla Girls were formed by seven women artists in the spring of 1985 in response to a survey of the most important contemporary artists in the world at MOMA, New York. The show featured works by 169 artists, only 13 of whom were women. The group will scrutinize the Icelandic situation in their new work and give a presentation in full jungle drag during the Festival’s final weekend.
