The exhibition hall at Miklatun Park was inaugurated in 1973, and was soon named Kjarvalsstadir in honor of the painter Jóhannes S. Kjarval.
Annually it hosts exhibitions of Icelandic and international art, with special emphasis on contemporary art.
Exhibitions from the Kjarval Collection is always a feature in the schedule at Kjarvalsstadir.

Kópavogur Art Museum is run by the Town of Kópavogur. More than 20 exhibitions have been held there every year on average since it opened in 1994. Programmes have featured a diverse range of modern and contemporary Icelandic art, and every year the museum also hosts exhibitions of art from other countries in collaboration with museums and institutions overseas.

The Living Art Museum, founded in 1978, is a non-profit gallery, a private institution run by an association of artists called the Living Art Museum Association. The Sigurjón Ólafsson Museum exhibits works by the Icelandic sculptor, Sigurjón Ólafsson. It is a private foundation, founded 1988.
In addition to its exhibition of Ólafsson's works, the museum sponsors various cultural programmes and its weekly summer concerts have become popular events in the culture life of Reykjavík.

The Nordic House in Reykjavík opened in 1968.and is a Nordic cultural center whose main goal is to serve as a link between Iceland and the other Nordic countries.
